Web2 in Web3: Starbucks and Nike Make Further NFT Inroads

With the word of Web3 expanding by the day, it’s as if the decentralised space is welcoming a fresh new Web2 face near-enough every week.

For sure, two of the most exciting and headlining-hitting projects to transcend both of such realms are those from Starbucks and Nike- i.e. two of the most notorious household names across the western hemisphere.

Per antics of the past week, both companies have made progress with regards to the involvement of NFTs in their respective Web3 platforms, which in turn, have caught the attention of many non- Web3 natives.

Starbuck’s ‘First Store’ NFT Drop

First to be discussed is Starbucks, which on Wednesday 19th April, dropped the second NFT collection tied to its in-development ‘Odyssey’ rewards program. Paradoxically, the collection is entitled the ‘First Store Collection’.

The collection consists of 5,000 Polygon-residing NFT ‘stamps,’ at a mint price of $100 a piece. Here, each asset serves as a ‘multimedia collage of photos, in-store textures, and prominent icons’ which seeks inspiration from the company’s first ever store in Seattle’s Pike Place Market.

As of the time of writing, a little under 500 of the NFTs remain available to be minted, as 4,579 are present on OpenSea. In addition, the collection’s floor price is over twice that of its mint price, as it currently sits at around $240 (or 0.123 ETH).

Through its links with the reward program, each NFT purchase grants holders 1500 points on the Starbucks Odyssey app. Such project was initially rolled-out in closed beta in December, with users tasked with completing in-app objectives- involving content interaction and purchases- in order to earn rewards points.

Around the same time, the company’s inaugural NFT ‘stamps’ were launched, with such assets helping catalyse the coffee giant’s dive in the non-fungible space.

With the Beta in mind, users who engaged with such phase of the project are being rewarded further through receiving a series of other benefits on April 24th. Here, the perks users receive will depend on how many points they’ve earned, with Starbucks already hinting that base level perks will entail a virtual coffee preparation class or a donation to food charity ‘Feeding America’.

More prestigious tiers of rewards will include naming a tree at the company’s coffee farm in Costa Rica, a personalised MiiR 360 tumbler with holder’s NFT printed on it, or a free in-store drink every day for 30 days.

The ‘First Store Collection’ comes as little as a month after the company’s first Odyssey-related NFT drop ‘Siren,’ which sold out in less that 20 minutes.

The 2000 assets could be minted for the same $100 price tag, with the collection’s floor price currently sitting at around $480 (or 0.247 ETH). As a reward inside of a reward scheme, holders of these first edition Starbucks NFTs were given early access to the ‘First Store Collection’ drop.

Despite two Odyssey-related NFT collections now being available across secondary marketplaces, the project hasn’t been fully launched yet. That being said, such event is most-certainly on the horizon, as the project’s beta users have been sent an email with the subject line ‘We’re Getting Closer’.

Nike’s Upcoming ‘Our Force 1’ NFT Collection

In an almost paralleling dynamic, sportswear pioneer Nike is prepping to launch the first NFT drop tied to its community-centric Web3 platform ‘.Swoosh’.

In paying homage to the company’s iconic ‘Air Force’ sneaker, the collection is entitled ‘Our Force 1’ (OF1), and will again reside on the ever-popular Ethereum scaling protocol Polygon

More specifically, the collection is bipartite in nature, as its ‘Classic Remix’ sneaker boxes will have a focus on Air Force editions from the 1982-2006 era, whilst its ‘New Wave’ boxes will take inspiration from post-2006 models.

Here, each type of NFT will feature virtual replicas of the sneakers in question, with the ‘Classic Remix’ instalment including rarer assets with a ‘nostalgic twist,’ whilst the ‘New Wave’ instalment will include a select few assets with a ‘futuristic twist’.

In addition, several fan co-created designs will feature across both NFT editions, with such move coming as part of ‘.Swoosh’s’ added emphasis on community expression. And finally, collectors will also be able to receive several utilities and perks through their ownership of an OF1 NFT, such as access to future Nike products and experiences.

In a nod to Air Force’s release year, each of the assets will cost $19.82 to mint (within a strictly-fiat payment policy). As of now, the collection’s supply hasn’t been released- with rumours suggesting that there may not be a limit.

What we can take away from such pricing strategy is that the assets will simply serve as virtual memorabilia, as opposed to being speculative investments.

In anticipation for the drop, this week also saw the airdropping of virtual Air Force 1 posters to a random selection of ‘.Swoosh’ members.

Here, such exclusive member base will be able to begin minting OF1 boxes on May 8th, with the collection then being available to the entire ‘.Swoosh’ community on May 10th. As of Nike’s most recent count, the ‘.Swoosh’ community is comprised of over 330,000 members.
